Like many members of the hip-hop community, veteran emcee and Detroit native Guilty Simpson has been mourning the sudden loss of fellow emcee Sean Price, who passed away in his sleep on Thursday, August 8, 2015. Julian Bond, a celebrated champion for civil rights and former chairman of the NAACP, passed away at the age of 75 on Saturday night. Bond died after a brief illness in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, according to The Associated Press. Julian Bond was one of the original leaders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee while he was a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He was the committee's communications leader for five years and swiftly directed national news media towards stories of violence and discrimination as the committee fought against segregation in the South. On top of being a leader during the civil rights movement, Mr. Bond was also a writer, poet, television commentator, lecturer and college professor, and a constant opponent of the remnants of white supremacy

Kendrick Lamar has been announced as Stephen Colbert's first musical guest as he takes over as host of The Late Show. Stephen Colbert is set to start his new job on September 8th, replacing David Letterman as the host. Lamar had previously been the last artist to perform on The Colbert Report, the TV reporter’s former Comedy Central show. Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar recently delivered disses at hip-hop rival Drake, on Dr. Dre's recently released album 'Compton'. On 'Deep Water' he name drops both Drake's hit 'Started From The Bottom' and recent track on his mixtape '6 God', saying: "Motherfucker know I started from the bottom" and "They liable to bury him, they nominated six to carry him/They worrying him to death, but he's no vegetarian/The beef

Drake's 'If You're Reading This It's Too Late' has become the first album released in 2015 to go platinum in the US. While classed as a mixtape, the album has been available commercially since February. The release includes guest appearances from Travis Scott, Lil Wayne, and Partynextdoor; and includes the songs 'Legend' and 'Energy'. Billboard reported that after selling 80,000 copies last week, it has now shifted to a little over 1 million units in the US. Celebrating the landmark achievement, Drake posted a picture of the album cover on Instagram alongside the caption: "Platinum off the tape. Views up next." Over the weekend Prince invited attendees at this year's National Association of Black Journalist convention to his estate in Minneapolis, asking them to leave their phones and recording devices at home. It's the first time Prince has ever invited a group of roughly 900 media professionals to his estate. Apparently many were expecting a performance, but the artist proceeded to announce his new album, HitNRun. The party turned into a mini listening party, where he played two of his new songs from the album. Prince then told the crowd that his newest album will be released on Tidal, a subscription-based service that gives more royalties to artists than other streaming services, on September 7th. The feud going on between Meek Mill and Drake stemmed from when Mill called out Drake for employing a ghostwriter on his songs. Since then, Drake as performed at OVO Fest in a "Free Meek Mill" shirt, that he obtained a few years ago when Meek Mill was in jail. Mill let loose an onslaught of threats and insults at Drake during a concert a few days ago, saying his Young Money and Cash Money labelmates "don't fuck" with him. Mill even went on to threaten Drake with a wedgie during a freestyle, saying "When I see them n****s, I might give them n****s a fucking wedgie."
