The career of Royce Da 5’9” does not fit neatly into an archetype storyline. For better or worse, it’s one of a kind. Who else can claim to be an artist who lives in the creative company of giants, and at the same time, accessible to the underground movement that birthed his career? Between Slaughterhouse, PRhyme, and Bad Meets Evil, the Detroit, Michigan MC has three dominant, differently successful groups he co-founded, all pulling from different parts of his skill and personality. That is before Nickel’s extensive solo catalog is even mentioned.
On April 15, 2016 Royce will release his sixth studio album, LAYERS, via Bad Half Entertainment/ INgrooves. This will be his first solo album in nearly five years and the very first for his Bad Half imprint, and as the album title suggests, this album will culminate his upward journey.
“This album was the first album that I spent a lot of time putting it together as a complete thought,” explains Royce Da 5’9” of LAYERS. “Most of my albums reflect an emotion based off of my feelings. Death Is Certain was dark because of everything I was going through; this album reflects my emotion, but also my thoughts.” That focus on LAYERS comes after a gold album, multiple Top 5 chart appearances, and a high profile BET Hip Hop Awards cypher performance. “I’ve learned a lot from being apart of B.M.E, Slaughterhouse and PRhyme and I've had the opportunity to use all of those experiences to better myself as artist, so it's very exciting to see how those experiences will affect my career.”
Executive produced by Mr. Porter and Royce, the D12 cofounder has worked on several classic albums and his role in LAYERS cannot be overstated. “Denaun is a genius and working with him is one of my comfortable working zones,” says Royce. “I like working with everyone I've worked with a lot on this project but Denaun's super easy and a lot like myself in a lot of ways.”
Operating as he successfully has almost his entire career (his way), LAYERS will be released on April 15th 2016. “I’ve spent a lot of years building my career and reputation, I love creating music and now it’s time to build my legacy.”
