Oddisee releases new song taken from his upcoming instrumental album

Brooklyn-based emcee/producer Oddisee dropped a new single Tuesday, April 19 for “Born Before Yesterday.” The track appears on his upcoming instrumental album The Odd Tape, which comes out May 13 on Mello Music Group. In a press release, Oddisee revealed the meaning behind his new release.

"The Odd Tape is meant to be a day-in-the-life piece set to audio,” he said. “Each track is the theme music to my routine. ‘Born Before Yesterday’ takes its title from the daily proposals I receive that question intelligence in ways that only the music industry can."

Oddisee is gearing up for a productive year, which includes an international tour with a live band and a new solo album.

As both a rapper and virtuosic producer with his ear to the sound of life, Oddisee is atypical when it comes to mainstream hip-hop. The Odd Tape oozes with the sounds of soul and jazz with its roots firmly planted in hip-hop, shining a light on perhaps the most important element of a song’s creation.

For the last decade, the Mello Music Group artist has alternated between instrumental albums, full-length hip-hop/rap records and his role as one-third of Diamond District. After a decade making music, the Brooklyn-based musician has transcended influences, comparisons and genres. The Odd Tape showcases the range of a composer bending hip-hop soul, and jazz into one cohesive fabric.

The Odd Tape revolves around the rhythms of the artist’s every day life. Beginning with “Alarmed,” it blends into “Right Side of the Bed,” presumably illustrating how he starts his mornings then ends with the aptly titled “Still Sleeping.”

The Odd Tape marks another chapter in Oddisee’s ever-evolving story. It can be the soundtrack to breakfast in the morning, a trip to the store for fresh groceries, cruising a bike through the city, or stepping out into the evening with friends before settling into a circadian rhythm once again. The Odd Tape isn’t so odd; it’s more an incredible body of work that brilliantly showcases the immense talent floating around in Oddisee’s creative mind.
