Kendrick Lamar compared the Reading festival to Compton, California, on account of the spirit of the people within the crowd. Recently, Compton has been getting more and more attention thanks to the release of N.W.A.'s biopic, Straight Outta Compton.
"One thing I love about being out here, it kinda reminds me of Compton," Lamar said after performing 'I' at his well-attended set as the penultimate act on the Main Stage. "As I look here it's some of the most live, live, live individuals."
Earlier, he had introduced himself on stage by saying: "I go by the name of Kendrick fucking Lamar," as people ran across the field just for his set. Lamar opened with 'Money Tree', and told the crowd "we've got a long way to go" before making his way through 'Backstreet Freestyle'.
"I see a lot of people who've been around with me since day one", he said to the crowd. He performed 'Swimming Pools (Drank)' and a version of ASAP Rocky's 'Fuckin Problems' to keep up the crowd's enthusiasm, following that with 'Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe' to "make sure nobody goes home with their vibe killed."
As it got darker, the set got a bit more serious with 'mAAd City' as Kendrick Lamar was bathed in a red light, as his guitarist led the show with a solo. Later, 'Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst' saw many of the crowd holding lighters high above their heads. Lamar closed the set with 'King Kunta', before coming back out for an encore of 'ADHD' and telling the crowd, "My name is Kendrick Lamar. I love y'all. I'll be back."
