Premiered via EDMTunes and out now on DJ Shadow’s Liquid Amber imprint as the latest of their Digital Dubplates series, the “Trades” release signifies something special for Dj Pound, aka Danny Gonzalez. The Chula Vista, CA native is an artist in rarefied company, a turntablist at heart who identifies with the underground but is at the forefront of the modernized beat-driven, electronic movement. Gonzalez describes his sound as an “instrumental electronic kind of hip hop with really loud booming bass,” and his latest release “Trades,” fits that description perfectly.
Featuring innovative and sophisticated sound design from countless hours working with samples in the studio, “Trades” is everything fans have come to expect and love from a Dj Pound anthem. The hard-hitting trap influences and twists of hip-hop flair make for a triumphant crossover slice of sample-laden magic, one that fits perfectly with the California-based Liquid Amber vibe. As always, Gonzalez attempts to reshape perceptions about the artistry behind bass music and to evolve further beyond the boundaries of the many genres of music he draws inspiration from. An EP is also rumored to be coming out on Saturate Records later this year as it’s all coming full circle for this ground-breaking young artist as he makes his mark on the ever-evolving music scene.
Though they’ve only known each other for a year or two, Dj Pound got involved with Liquid Amber after hearing that Shadow was playing one of his songs in his DJ set. “He’s a legend in our culture,” Gonzalez says when asked about DJ Shadow, “My dad even knew who he was when I told him about this!”. Yet, with features on Boiler Room, NEST HQ, YOUREDM, and support from G Jones, Herobust, and more, Dj Pound remains humble and dedicated, excited to be making music as he is to be earning ratification for it. “It's surreal and extremely validating when your earlier music influences/idols play the music you make,” he says of the support he’s received.
