Common wants more hip hop in the Hall of Fame

The introduction of hip hop artists like NWA and Public Enemy into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been met with some resistance from rock elitists, but Common says that the Cleveland institution should be adding even more hip hop artists.

Tupac Shakur was the only hip hop musician to be nominated for induction into the Hall of Fame this year. Other nominees this year include rock bands Journey and Pearl Jam, R&B and funk legend Chaka Khan, and electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk, among others.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Common named the other hip hop artists he hopes will be immortalized in the Hall of Fame. "Queen Latifah is one of the first people to come to mind... A Tribe Called Quest. De La Soul! De La Soul is so powerful. Nas and OutKast are some that come to mind, as well," Common told Rolling Stone.

The first hip hop artist to be inducted into the hall of fame were early hip hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. They were followed by Run DMC, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, and finally, NWA in 2016.

Common is currently promoting the upcoming release of his latest album, Black America Again, which drops later this week on Nov. 4.
