South Central Los Angeles G-Funk rapper G Perico is on a roll. After dropping his most recent project, All Blue, the Jheri curl-sporting artist is focused on continuing his winning streak, which includes The Fader naming him one of L.A.’s “most promising” new voices in rap. In Part I of the RAPstation interview, the 29-year-old opened up about his gang affiliation, how his life has changed and (of course) his hairstyle. In Part II, he talks about growing up, his ultimate goals and how he’s been working on his autograph.  

Hailing from the rough streets of South Central Los Angeles, burgeoning artist G Perico really saw music as his only salvation. At 29 years old, the Jheri curl-sporting G-Funk rapper is finally getting noticed by not only his peers, but also industry tastemakers. From his 2015 breakout single “G-Shit” to his latest album, All Blue, he doesn’t shy away from his gang affiliation and stays true to exactly who he is. While Perico’s music is in the same vein as gangster rappers like Eazy-E, N.W.A, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg, he manages to put his own unique spin on the G-funk sound, and give it a freshness perfectly suited for the new millennium.

Young burgeoning rapper and outspoken activist Ric Wilson is presumably on top of the world right now. He just released his new EP,Negrow Disco, earlier this week and recently dropped the song “Hang Loose” featuring an intro from Chuck D. Comprised of four tracks, Negrow Disco is dubbed as a tribute to the legends of dance music, a concept that was sparked by a conversation with an elder at a barbershop. Elements of house, hip-hop, and modern pop all blend into one cohesive fabric, delivering Wilson’s signature sound. The Chicago native had a few moments to talk about growing up on the Southside, the most important message he wants to get across in his music and the first time he met the Public Enemy frontman. 

Long Beach native Vince Staples is currently having the ride of his life. The 23-year-old Def Jam Recordings artist has embraced his reputation as a “regular” rapper and never relied on flashy cars, glitz or glam to woo his fans. He spits nothing but solid, real life raps. After collaborating with members of Odd Future and working with Mac Miller on his Stolen Youth mixtape, he dropped his debut EP Hell Can Waitin 2014. It was his 2015 debut album, Summertime ’06, however, that really put the young spitter on the map.
