Acclaimed for his talents as an on-screen actor and his advocative contributions to Hip-hop's conscious movement, Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) announced his official retirement yesterday October 14th. The announcement was made via Facebook live-stream where Bey also mentioned the premise of his final performance.
“I'm retiring for real this year, this week,” announced an emphatic Mos Def through his live streaming, “With the 17th anniversary of [his debut album] Black on Both Sides being released, I am grateful to have had the career that I have been able to enjoy.”
The rapper/actor continued by emphasizing his gratefulness towards fans, friends, and family members, as well as commending fellow artists and collaborators, such as Jay Z, Kanye West, Madlib, and Jay Electronica—all contributors to Bey's campaign against oppression and unwarranted violence.
Despite his announced retirement, Bey has been significantly active this year in regard to his contributions in music, cataloguing appearances on a Tribe Called Red's “R.E.D.”, live performances with BADBADNOTGOOD in Africa, as well as releasing songs with Dec. 99th partner Ferrari Sheppard. Aside from this, Bey also mentioned “one or two” more films and “exclusive new material” for Jay Z's Tidal project. Bey finalized all work via initial audio message, “that's that”.
Bey's final performance will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, and assured fans regarding the show's live-stream access.
