Hip-hop Invades “Hamilton Mixtape”, featuring Nas, Ja Rule, The Roots, and more

Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the release of his Tony Award-winning musical's much-awaited mixtape, which features numerous Hip-hop icons, such as Nas, Chance the Rapper, Ja Rule, Wiz Khalifa, and many more.

Hamilton is a critically-acclaimed broadway musical, both authored by and featuring Miranda, who birthed the idea seven years ago upon reading biographical accounts of the United States' first Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. According to Miranda, Hamilton represented among the earliest revolutionaries who “embodied Hip-hop”.

That being said, Miranda's enthusiasm at unveiling his extensive Hip-hop-influenced mixtape only aroused more anticipation as he revealed Hamilton's iconic songs donned by iconic figures such as Nas, Chance the Rapper, The Roots, Common, and Wiz Khalifa, as well as tracks performed by Usher, Alicia Keys, and John Legend.

While the list mentions songs exclusive within the mixtape, such as “Wrote My Way Out” which features Dave East, Miranda, Nas, and Aloe Blacc, other tracks feature remixes off the musical's official soundtracks, such as Wiz Khalifa's rendition of “Washingtons By Your Side”.

The song “My Shot” comes closest in blending both aspects of mixtape and musical, and is handled by The Roots, showcasing Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz, and Nate Ruess.

Apart from this, Ashanti and Ja Rule offer a trip back to the early-2000s under Murder Inc skies with their duet to the track, “Helpless”.

Both Broadway and Hip-hop fans are all lining up, eager to catch a first glimpse of the highly-anticipated Hamilton mixtape, which finally drops tomorrow.
