MC Sha-Rock's Women In Hip-Hop Festival Takes Over The Bronx On June 1

MC Sha-Rock Day Presents: Women in Hip Hop Festival, billed as "a vibrant celebration of the contributions and influence of women in Hip-Hop," takes place on Saturday (June 1) from 2p.m. to 7 p.m. ET at Gun Hill Playground in the Bronx, New York.

Hosted by Roxanne Shanté, the free event promises an enticing lineup of live performances, games, giveaways and more. Named after the first female rapper, MC Sha-Rock, the annual celebration was formally recognized by former Councilman Andy King in 2019.

The sixth annual soirée is produced by Tia Evette Productions in conjunction with New York Music Month from the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and Monster Energy and aims to preserve the legacy of pioneering female artists while providing a platform for emerging voices in Hip-Hop.

MC Sha-Rock, often referred to as the "Mother of the Mic," emerged in the 1970s as part of the Funky 4+1 and was the first female rapper to appear on national television, performing on Saturday Night Live in 1981. Not only did she pave the way for future generations of female Hip-Hop artists, she also bravely fought for her voice to be heard in a world dominated by men.

“We are thrilled to host this festival in honor of MC Sha-Rock and all the women who have played a pivotal role in shaping hip hop culture,” Tia Evette, producer of the festival and Sha-Rock's daughter, said. “This event is not only a tribute to the past but also a celebration of the future, providing a stage for emerging female artists to showcase their talent.”
