Omaha-based artist Marcey Yates has returned with a new single called "On Display," which serves as the inaugural track from his forthcoming album, Chocolate For Water.
'"On Display' is a story about being in the public eye, reaching new goals and riding the wave and the music business," Yates explained in a statement. "The song speaks on the journey of happiness, disappointment and new relationships."
Chocolate For Water will arrive on July 7 via Culxr House Records, which stems from Yates' Culxr House community. Based in North Omaha, Culxr House—described as a "creative safe space"—aims to provide artists and creatives a place to grow their talent and obtain access to resources necessary to turn their art into economic opportunities. It "exists to bridge both social and economic gaps through the cultivation of talent and artistry within the inner city," as noted in a press release.
As suggested by the album's title, Chocolate for Water is inspired by the Laura Esquivel novel-turned-Alfonso Arau film. The album art, meanwhile, is a play on Common’s Like Water For Chocolate album, depicting someone at a water fountain labeled “white only or black only" during the '60s when segregation and the civil rights movement were at a fever pitch.
