Kehlani Parrish, known professionally as Kehlani, was born on April 24, 1995 in Oakland, California. The R&B singer-songwriter is currently signed to Atlantic Records. She achieved initial fame as a member of the teen pop group, PopLyfe, which was a finalist on America’s Got Talent. Kehlani released her first mixtape, Cloud 19, in 2014 which was listed among Complex’s “50 Best Albums of 2014”. Kehlani's second mixtape, You Should Be Here, premiered at number 2 on the national R&B charts in 2015 and preceded her sold-out North American tour.
She’s gone on to explain her ethnicity as “black, white, Native American, and hispanic”. Raised by her aunt, due to her father’s early death and her mother coming in and out of prison, she attended Oakland School for the Arts with a focus on dance. Kehlani’s aunt listened almost exclusively to R&B and neo soul, and Kehlani cites Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott among her earliest influences. She was also nominated for a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
Kehlani has collaborated with Zayn for one of the tracks on his debut album Mind of Mine, to be released on March 25th, 2016.
