OVO Sound’s young founder has shown a rather cryptic way of encrypting messages to the media. It appears that certain “Drake Billboards” are becoming a trend, often seen in LA streets and on the social media posts via curious passers.
The most recent, however, presents itself in a straightforward sentence. Fashioned against an all-red backdrop and branded with OVO’s symbolic owl, the sign reads “Let’s all get along like they do in Canada”.
Drake’s blunt billboard statement perhaps alludes to his initial reaction to the growing issues of violence and social injustice becoming more rampant across the nation. Just this summer, the young rapper posted on Instagram what appeared to be a direct response to the Alton Sterling shooting in Louisiana.
“It’s impossible to ignore that the relationship between black and brown communities and law enforcement remains as strained as it was decades ago,” reads Drake’s post in all-caps, “this is real and I’m concerned… I do not know the answer… but I believe things can change for the better… open and honest dialogue is the first step”.
Prior to Drake’s petition to “all get along”, another OVO billboard hinted another story.
Fonted with white against green the board encrypted “Calabasas is the new Abu Dhabi”, this time floating above OVO’s owl aside Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music logo.
Drake and West have collaborated several times in the past. However, West made a memorable surprise appearance during Drake’s hometown performance just last month. On stage, the two exchanged a short but very interesting dialogue.
“Toronto, I got one question for you,” West asked, “Is you ready for this album? I’m not talking about Pablo… I’m not talking about VIEWS… Y’all ready for this album”.
Drake answered with “What my brother was asking before was, are you ready if we make that album? That’s what he was asking”.
Although the two have worked together in previous projects, the idea of Drake and West coming together for an entire album does sound temptingly intriguing. On the other hand, perhaps Drake’s billboards were already hinting this—including the most recent.
Drake’s been on a roll with these cryptic messages, and only time will decipher its conclusion. However, perhaps these “messages” contain hints pertaining to a collaborative-movement between the two artists. However enigmatic they are, they do insist one thing: Drake’s up to something. And with the way he’s addressing things, it’s probably big. Only time will tell.
