CANVA$: The RAPstation Interview

At only 19 years old, Canva$ admits he has a hefty list of goals he wants to reach by the age of 25. But while he might look fresh out-of high school, don’t let that mislead you in understanding how seriously he takes his music. He has managed to maintain complete ownership of his publishing, royalties, sales, merchandise and touring revenue on every one of his releases, despite his young age. Canva$ won’t take all the credit for it saying, “That’s all Forbes music. They’re the ones who did it.” But he will say that keeping ownership of all his art is important to him. As for his beginnings as an artist, he grew up in Goldsboro, North Carolina in the state’s custody and there’s no doubt that his rough childhood helped to motivate him. At the age of eight, he began singing and then took on writing at ten years old, “but only small things, it got more serious Freshman year.” Through out high school he really fostered his ability to write and rap, taking part in cyphers and eventually people began asking him to rap for them. While he listens to a wide variety of music, he looks to Nas, Jay Z, and Eminem for inspiration and writing style. His music has been compared to Drake, Kanye West and J. Cole, which is undoubtedly a high compliment for someone as young as him. In terms of what level he’d like to reach, Tupac is his main goal. “I admire how motivated he was and his leadership, the ability to be seen on the same level as him would be amazing,” he says. At 19 and already compared to three of the biggest names in rap music today, there’s no telling where he could end up and no limit to his potential. By Devon Pyne for RAPstation.com
