Action Bronson: The RAPstation Interview

Very Few Words with Action Bronson The RAPstation Interview By Kyle Eustice Action Bronson is a busy, busy man. The Flushing, Queens native has exploded onto the rap scene after dropping his 2011 debut, Dr. Lecter. Since then, he's done an international tour with Eminem, signed to Shady Records and been featured on the cover of XXL Magazine as part of the 2013 Freshman Class. Despite all of his musical accolades, he's also shining in the kitchen. The former gourmet chef landed a Vice online cooking show, Fuck, That's Delicious, which has really taken off. All in all, Bronson is living the dream. While his lyrics may not resonate with everybody (they can be pretty brutal), he definitely has an ear for beats. As he was making his way from Coachella to Miami, Action Bronson had a few minutes to talk "Whoomp! There It Is," the, uh, benefits of Colorado and growing up in a musical household. RAPstation (Kyle Eustice): I read Kool G Rap was big influence and considering you grew up in New York City, the epicenter of the culture, were you exposed to hip-hop pretty early? Action Bronson: I would say 1988 or '89 was the first time I even bought music on my own. I've been buying music since I can remember. I was buying singles, maxi singles, albums, shit like that. I started early with my love of music. I remember in 5th grade getting Licensed To Ill. What was your first tape? Wreckx-N-Effect [laughs]. Wu-Tang's 36 Chambers was the first record I ever bought. I'm not going to front. I think I had "Whoomp! There It Is" on single. Yeah! I bought every single there was. Of course, I had "Whoomp! There It Is." (Smoke the fucking weed bro! is heard in the background.) Are you coming out to Colorado? Sounds like you would really like it [laughs]. You know I'm coming out to Colorado. I can't wait. I'll be in Denver for the radio station summer jam. How did you get your music heard in the first place? I would say it was before 2011's Dr. Lecter. It was 2009. A friend of mine, Steve Crowley, he had hosted some shit that I did on the internet on some website. I didn't know you could do that on YouTube. It's been up there since and it just gained momentum from there. That's how my shit first got heard. What was your household like growing up? I have a very musical family. My mother loves all types of music and my father was a musician, still is. He plays the guitar. He played in psychedelic rock bands in Macedonia and Turkey, stuff like that. You're just coming back from Coachella so have you literally just driven across the whole country? We flew to Los Angeles, started in Seattle and have been driving down from Seattle. We took a couple days off, dropped the Sprinter off on the West Coast, came back and did Detroit on 4/20. Now we're just riding down. The last destination is towards Miami. I break them up into legs so it's easier to do.
