The Shakur family has faced insurmountable tragedies over the years, including the 1981 arrest of 2Pac's stepfather, Mutulu Shakur. But according to The Bureau of Prisons, Shakur was released from a federal prison in Victorville, California after nearly four decades behind bars for "medical reasons." As the New York Daily News reported, the U.S. Parole Commission ordered his release during an October 12 hearing, explaining the 72-year-old had been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer in 2019 causing his health to suffer greatly.
The commission explained in their findings, "The commission finds that your medical condition has significantly deteriorated since your last hearing in April 2022 and, we now find your medical condition renders you so infirm of mind and body that you are no longer physically capable of committing any federal, state or local crime."
Shakur was arrested in 1986 for masterminding a series of robberies in New York and Connecticut committed by a radical group called “The Family.” He was convicted of planning the 1981 Brink’s robbery that left two Nyack police officers and an armored car guard dead. Originally sentenced to 60 years in prison, Shakur was denied parole multiple times. As part of his release conditions, he's forbidden to have contact with his fugitive sister, Joanne Chesimard (aka Assata Shakur) or the families of the slain officers.
"Mutulu is now with his family," a statement on his website reads. "This victory was secured by the steadfast support of his legal team, his family and his community comprised of all of you.”
