July 10th – Play of Kid ‘N’ Play was born Christopher Martin in Queens, New York, on this day in 1962.
Play’s original MC name was Playboy when he was part of a group called Quicksilver And The Super Lovers, which also featured Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor.
Azor would go on to produce hit records for Kid ‘N’ Play as well Salt ‘N’ Pepa.
Around this time, Play met another MC who went by the name of Kid Coolout who was in another group called The Turnout Brothers.
The two decided to work together as a duo when the other members of the two respected groups decided to go their separate ways.
By shortening their names, Playboy and Kid Coolout became known as Kid ‘N’ Play.
Play, along with his partner Kid, recorded three successful albums as well as starring in hip-hop based comedy films such as “House Party 1, 2 and 3” and “Class Act”.
When Kid ‘N’ Play went their separate ways in 1995, Play became a born-again Christian and focused mainly on “Christian Hip-Hop.”
Recently, Play starred as an undercover DEA agent in the film “The Return.”
Play is also the founder of HP4 Digital, a pre and post production multimedia company for film, digital media and theater.
Play has also been a judge at the annual Independent Music Awards to support Indie artists.
Play has also taught a course in hip-hop, in the past, at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina where he currently resides.
