June 7th – Ecstasy of Whodini was born John Fletcher in Brooklyn, New York, on this day in 1964.

Ecstasy’s role as one of hip-hop’s first sex symbols, was responsible for being one of the early catalysts for leading female listeners, who previously had been strictly r’n’b fans, to buying rap records.

Ecstasy’s trademark black leather Zorro hat, accompanied by his black leather jacket, that he usually wore shirtless made him of the most recognizable hip-hop figures of his time.

Ecstasy, along with partners Jalil Hutchins and Drew “DJ Grandmaster Dee” Carter, brought Whodini much chart success and crossover appeal to r’n’b as well as pop fans.

His cool laid back vocals would grace countless Whodini classics such as “Friends”, “Magic’s Wand”, “Big Mouth”, “The Haunted House Of Rock”, “Five Minutes Of Funk”, “Rap Machine”, “One Love” and “Funky Beat.”

One of Whodini’s last biggest hits would be on Public Enemy DJ Terminator X’s sophomore solo album “Super Bad” called “It All Comes Down To The Money.”

Ecstasy would appear with Jalil and Dee on all six of their albums. Those six being their 1983 Self Entitled debut album, 1984’s “Escape”, 1986’s “Back In Black”, 1987’s “Open Sesame”, 1991’s “Bag-A-Trix” and 1996’s “Six”, which was produced by Jermaine Dupri.
